Adenomyosis Surgery

Adenomyosis is a gynecological condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. It may cause severe menstrual cramps, heavy or prolonged periods, chronic pelvic pain, an enlarged or tender uterus, and discomfort during intercourse.

Many women with adenomyosis can be managed with medications or hormonal treatments. Surgery may be considered when symptoms are severe, significantly affect quality of life, or do not improve adequately with conservative treatment.

The choice of surgery depends on the extent and location of adenomyosis, severity of symptoms, age, previous treatments, and future pregnancy plans. Surgical options may include conservative uterus-preserving procedures in carefully selected cases. For women with severe adenomyosis who have completed childbearing, hysterectomy provides definitive treatment because the affected uterus is removed.

When appropriate, hysterectomy may be performed using a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach. Compared with conventional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery can offer smaller incisions, less postoperative discomfort, shorter hospitalization, and faster recovery in suitable patients.

A comprehensive evaluation, including clinical examination and imaging such as ultrasound or MRI when indicated, helps determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.
