Contraception counselling helps women and couples make informed decisions about preventing or spacing pregnancies based on their health, lifestyle, personal preferences, and future reproductive plans. Since every contraceptive method has different benefits, limitations, and suitability, professional guidance can help identify the most appropriate option for each individual.

During a contraception consultation, Dr. Pakeeza Haque considers factors such as age, menstrual pattern, medical history, previous pregnancies, breastfeeding status, current medications, and plans for future pregnancy.

Depending on individual suitability, contraceptive options may include condoms and other barrier methods, oral contraceptive pills, injectable contraceptives, intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs), and other long-acting reversible contraceptive methods. Emergency contraception and permanent contraception may also be discussed when appropriate.

Counselling includes information about how each method works, effectiveness, possible side effects, correct use, reversibility, and when follow-up may be required. Postpartum and post-abortion contraception can also be planned according to individual needs.

It is important to remember that most contraceptive methods do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms can help reduce the risk of many STIs when used correctly and consistently.
