Infertility Due to
Ovarian Cysts

Most ovarian cysts do not cause infertility. However, certain types—particularly ovarian endometriomas associated with endometriosis or cysts that affect ovarian function—may influence fertility.

Women may experience pelvic pain, painful periods, menstrual irregularities, discomfort during intercourse, or no symptoms at all. An ovarian cyst may also be discovered incidentally during an infertility evaluation.

Assessment usually includes pelvic ultrasound to determine the cyst's size, appearance, and location. Additional blood tests, imaging, and fertility investigations may be recommended depending on individual circumstances.

Treatment depends on the type and size of the cyst, symptoms, age, ovarian reserve, and reproductive goals. Observation may be appropriate for many cysts. When surgery is necessary, laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy may be considered, with emphasis on preserving healthy ovarian tissue whenever clinically feasible.
