Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of organ involvement, usually developing after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It can affect the mother's kidneys, liver, and other organs, and may restrict the baby's growth.

Symptoms may include severe headache, visual disturbances, swelling of the hands and face, upper abdominal pain, or sudden weight gain. Some women may not notice any symptoms, which is why regular antenatal check-ups are essential for early detection.

Diagnosis involves blood pressure monitoring, urine testing for protein, blood investigations, and close assessment of fetal growth and well-being. Management depends on the severity of the condition and gestational age, and may include medications, close maternal and fetal monitoring, and carefully planned timing of delivery.
